Project Type: Storage Migration and Refresh
|Company Type:||National Non-Profit Organization|
|Company Size:||Medium Sized Headquarters with Several Locations|
- Data Migration
- Hardware and Software Upgrades
- New Hardware Implementation
- Data Replication
Our Client is a non-profit organization dedicated to the fair treatment of animals in the United States. Their primary location supports several remote offices and functions as the headquarters for storage hardware, software, data management, and server virtualization platforms. Headwaters engineers have performed several projects for this particular organization with this particular case study focusing on a recent storage hardware refresh for improved performance, higher capacity, and increased reliability.
This organization required a NetApp hardware upgrade from an outdated FAS2020 storage appliance to the FAS2240 storage appliance. They use approximately 40 to 50 hard drives to provide storage services to the entire agency. This system is used as a backup target for every piece of data saved on the organization’s network. The FAS2020 had reached its end of life, was not under warranty, and could not provide the required performance or reliability necessary for moving forward. This hardware upgrade was performed to refresh this dated system and to deploy a newer, larger subsystem capable of meeting future performance needs.
It was a multi-level project involving the installation of new hardware and the migration of data from the old source device to the new hardware platform. A standard migration was performed to move the data to the newer platform. This allowed our client to boost performance and speed while having the ability to leverage the latest NetApp technologies on a more current hardware platform. Snapmirror, a NetApp product, was the software feature used to perform the actual data move to the new platform. After the migration, primary data on another NetApp storage appliance backup had to be updated on the new hardware.
This Client required a reliable data migration with minimal impact to their mission critical applications. The use of NetApp storage appliances also resulted in increased complexity for several other long and short term storage/virtualization technology projects. Headwaters engineers were engaged because the Client required subject matter experts versed in this type of complexity, the data migration technique involved, as well as the underlying platform. The organization turned to Headwaters because the skill sets of our engineers aligned with their exact requirements for managing this type of environment..
